Sharwood the Gordon Setter: Celebrating 40 Lifesaving Blood Donations

Sharwood, a Gordon setter, recently completed his 40th and final blood donation for Pet Blood UK. Known for his calm demeanor, Sharwood snored his way through the milestone session, underscoring his relaxed nature even during life-saving procedures.

Sharwood’s owner, Sue Mitchell, expressed her delight at this remarkable achievement, celebrating at a donor session in Northampton. “He likes it all so much he falls asleep the moment he lies on the table in the donor room,” Mitchell shared, highlighting Sharwood’s ease with the process.

Since the charity’s establishment in 2007, Pet Blood UK has facilitated thousands of dog blood donations following a legislative change allowing for the collection and storage of animal blood. Sharwood stands out as the first dog to reach 40 donations, a testament to his unique contribution to canine health.

Nicole Osborne, Pet Blood UK’s marketing manager, praised Sharwood’s achievement as “incredible,” noting that his donations have saved the lives of 160 dogs. Veterinary nurse Zoe Lord, who has been responsible for extracting Sharwood’s samples, described him as “a relaxed dog in general.”

Sharwood’s journey as a donor began effortlessly, likely due to his experience as a show dog accustomed to handling and grooming. From his first session, he fell asleep and snored, a routine he maintained until his final donation.

Having reached the age of eight, Sharwood has now retired from donating blood. To honor his service, Pet Blood UK awarded him an engraved gold medal and a pile of doggy goodies. The charity ensures that all donor dogs undergo a pre-donation health check and receive positive reinforcement, making the experience enjoyable for them.

Dogs eligible to donate must weigh over 25kg (55lb), be fit and healthy, aged between one and eight, and have confident temperaments. Like humans, dogs have different blood types, with negative blood donors being particularly valuable due to their universal donor status.

Sue Mitchell, whose other dogs have also donated blood, advocates for the cause, emphasizing the importance of helping other dogs. “If your dog has a suitable temperament and you have the time to go to the sessions, it’s very, very worthwhile,” she said.

Sharwood’s legacy as a life-saving donor dog will inspire others to follow in his pawprints, making a significant impact on canine health and well-being.
