James Gunn, the director of the upcoming Superman film, has made an exciting announcement: Krypto the Superdog will be part of the movie, set to release next summer. Krypto is the beloved pet of Superman, and he will have superpowers, just like his owner.
Gunn recently shared on social media that his own dog, Ozu, inspired Krypto’s character. After adopting Ozu, who came from a difficult situation, Gunn found that the experience changed his life and influenced the screenplay for Superman. “Ozu was problematic to say the least,” Gunn explained. He described how Ozu had a tough start in life, living in a hoarding situation with 60 other dogs. When he first arrived at Gunn’s home, Ozu caused quite a bit of chaos, destroying furniture and even chewing on Gunn’s laptop. It took time for Ozu to trust them, which made Gunn think about how challenging life could be if a dog like Ozu had superpowers. This idea ultimately led to Krypto’s inclusion in the script.
Krypto is a well-known character in the DC Comics universe, having appeared in various forms of media over the years, including his own animated series, Krypto the Superdog, and the animated film DC’s League of Superpets, where Dwayne Johnson voiced him. However, it seems Krypto won’t be a talking dog in Gunn’s film, as that might make things a bit too quirky for the story.
Gunn also noted that Ozu, despite his initial mischief, has become a “fairly often, very good boy.” This heartwarming transformation ties in perfectly with Gunn’s plans for Superman, especially since October is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month.
The Superman film, initially titled Superman: Legacy, is part of Gunn’s vision for a new universe of interconnected DC films alongside his partner, Peter Safran. With Krypto’s appearance, there’s a chance he might show up in future DC movies as well.
Set to hit theaters on July 11, 2025, Superman stars David Corenswet as Clark Kent, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, along with a talented supporting cast that includes Milly Alcock, Isabela Merced, Frank Grillo, and Nathan Fillion.
As fans eagerly await the film’s release, it’s clear that Krypto the Superdog will add a unique and heartwarming element to this new chapter in the Superman saga.
